In shiny olive greens, slate, petrol blue and white, the palette as we’d expect remained controlled to mirror the shapes that they incarnated: shoulder-heavy trench and frock coats, thickly belted with molten clasps and boasting leather panels, worn with stompy wader boots beneath them which were something of a loafer-wellington hybrid; dirndl-shaped skirt dresses or pleated kilt skirts (something that has been creeping up a lot at New York Fashion Week – see Victoria Beckham, her Victoria line and Reed Krakoff among them); quilted and padded tops with a futuristic temperament that worked especially well with the gently slicked-back hair.

It was modern and minimalist – for that’s what the Calvin brand is all about – and we saw a continuation of the spring/summer 2013 trend for plaid, sometimes just quietly providing the backdrop to one of its stealthy coats and other times transformed into a perforated lattice effect for the actual construction of those leather skirts. It was a clever and accessible take on the trend for sci-fi which so often wanders down the wrong road and looks too much like its wearers are actually joining Star Trek’s Star Fleet. But then if these were actually the uniforms being dished out, it’s more than likely there’d be a sudden sign-up increase.
